How to relax, be in the moment and enjoy the journey, Ep12
Sunday Mar 24, 2019
Sunday Mar 24, 2019
At what age does someone go from having potential to having wasted that potential? It is not easy for me to take a day off. Self-care is one thing, just chilling around my house and turning off my brain is another. Here are MY keys to being in the moment.
-
You are done "wasting" time. You are sober now and you just bought back all that time from the future you would've been using.
-
Only the self, the ego, cares about the future or the past - the present moment is all that really matters so work focusing on that.
-
Get work done when you can and get some healing time in for you, your circle and work when it is time for that.
- It is important that you heal, recover, and follow your program - whatever that looks like to you. It is equally important that you begin your growth, nurturing yourself toward the life you really want to live.
We all wasted a lot of time while we were using. Not that we are clean there is probably a sense of urgency to repair our relationships, get our lives back together and to get out job or career in order. Remember, you can only do so much today, so make a plan, stick with it and get yourself going toward the life you desire.
And be gentle on yourself. You are on the right path - this is a marathon, not a sprint. I'm really saying this to myself and thinking you could probably use a reminder too.

Fear is a natural human experience - Embrace fear to overcome it, Ep11
Monday Mar 18, 2019
Monday Mar 18, 2019
Fear should not be avoided. Journey through the fear to gain the courage to continue forward on your quest. If you are not feeling fear in something you are doing then you are in your comfort zone - and no true growth occurs inside your comfort shell.
Fear: An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or
something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or a threat.
-
Fear is a natural human experience
-
We use our courage to create our capability and we use that capability to create our confidence.
- when we have experience doing something we have less and less fear associated with that activity.
-
If you are not feeling fear then you are not pushing yourself outside your comfort zone - use your courage to move through that fear.
Feeling fear is normal - it is literally built into our DNA
- when you push against pain it causes suffering
- you have to step into the feeling of the negative emotion - that is when you use courage to overcome fear.
Thank you so much for listening and being a part of this wonderfully supportive community. No longer are we living in the shadows!

Release disappointment, be less argumentative, and control your emotions
Sunday Mar 10, 2019
Sunday Mar 10, 2019
Ep #10 - Expectations lead to disappointment because rarely will something live up to the picture you have of it in your mind. Being confrontational and defensive is your ego talking and, if you're even remotely similar to me, the ego is what got me into the mess to begin with. Not wanting to feel fear, anxiety, or any undesirable emotions, is the child ego being in charge. Managing and controlling your emotions is often about the space between being stimulated and the action is triggers.
Let's kick fear and anxiety's ass and in this week's episode we are going to cover all that and more!
Topics covered this week
- Fear, Anxiety
- Procrastination
- Perfectionism
Say what you mean and mean what you say:
- ask why a lot
- be less confrontational
- be clear and direct
Be okay expressing feelings/thoughts/beliefs that might upset someone.
- don't be handcuffed to your ideas
- don't take on others emotions as your own
- be empathetic not empathic
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, head the call!

How expectations create self-doubt in early sobriety (well, life in general really)
Thursday Mar 07, 2019
Thursday Mar 07, 2019
Ep #9: Self-doubt is a feeling, and we know that feelings come from thoughts - which are abundant, fleeting, and controllable. An expectation is a thought about how things could, should, or would play out in reality. When I feel self-doubt, I follow these three keys.
The three ways I find confidence are through self-doubt.
-
My memories are just thoughts, and thoughts drive feelings, and feelings and thoughts are fleeting and abundant, so let's clear your mind through intention-driven thinking.
- Let certain things go and live in the moment.
-
The choice to change can happen instantly, but the actual change takes time.
- Things come when we are ready.
- The moment you truly decide to change, then the change has occurred. In the essence or aura of your life, the actual progression to that change will take time. Don't get instant gratification monkey on me with this. Keep the panic monster at bay by working on little things each day.
-
I already have the resources to overcome or succeed in any endeavor; I need to implement it. What can I do today to move forward?
- The strength and resiliency to overcome challenges is inside you right now. Of the many things one could say about those with an addiction history is that we are resourceful.
Just hit play, and let's dive in with open minds and hearts—you are in the right place, at the right time—right now.

Valentine's Day is a day to share the love you feel toward the ones you love. For me, it is also the day that my mother succumbed to alcoholism and Crohn's.
I share my story of my path to addiction and the events that left me with the trauma I am cleaning up and healing through as a man today.

Acceptance and non-judgement around recovery programs, Ep7
Monday Feb 11, 2019
Monday Feb 11, 2019
There are many ways to get sober and just as many toward the path of recovery. Being accepting of one another's paths and not judging each other for not doing it "my" way is key in being of integrity, humility, and gratitude.
There are so many commentators on Instagram about how "you" should get sober. What's really important is that you stop using. How that looks today is probably not how that will look tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.
Each moment is a step. Sometimes forward, sometimes backward - but my key to remember is that there is no failure, only feedback on how to do it better the next time.

Cue, craving, response, reward and sobriety at special occasions, Ep6
Monday Feb 04, 2019
Monday Feb 04, 2019
Play it out to the credits. Having just one isn't a choice for us. See, in your mind, how the movie ends when you have "just one." We know there is an addict in us, we don't need to be reminded every second, of every day. Our addictive mindsets are in there, lurking, and to be aware of that is your most powerful weapon.
Special occasions are difficult things to attend when you are in sobriety and addiction recovery. Super Bowl Sunday is my favorite holiday of the year and the first big challenge I had two years ago when I first got sober.
How you see yourself there, how you view others, your mindset going into the event, what you'll do when offered alcohol or drugs, how you'll respond - there are so many factors to take into account.
Here are four things I watch out for when I attend functions that are generally drinking events.
Cue: triggers
Craving: which motivates a
Response: which provides a
Reward: which get associated with the cue
Be aware of the cues around you at events and be mindful of the craving. Stop it in its tracks by responding in a way that breaks the habitual structure your mind has created so that the reward provides you a stabilizing action - thus feeding thoughts of you being in control and the emotions of confidence and mindfulness in situations that would have, in the past, pushed you into your addiction cycle.

Monday Jan 28, 2019
We are in charge of our own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Blaming someone else for how we behave is immature and unacceptable behavior. Children blame others for how they feel and as adults, we are in responsible for teaching them that we decide how we feel, but that's hard for adults to do when they too blame others for how they feel, think, and act.
Emotional Maturity is so many things in life, let alone within addiction recovery. Trauma from our childhoods' reaches out and snares us when we least expect it. At some point in our lives, we all began using as a solution to the emotional damage we suffered and when that solution became the problem it was too late to go back and choose a different direction.
Now that we have decided to start a new journey, on a new path, our life begins anew, though there are still issues we must move and grow through. These three keys will help us all be more grounded in our sobriety and recovery as we learn to flourish and rise from the ashes of addiction.
- Taking responsibility for your words and actions
- Not blaming others for the above
- understanding what it is you are actually feeling and why you are saying it.

How to quit using and forge through the first day, week, month
Monday Jan 21, 2019
Monday Jan 21, 2019
Ep #4 - The absolute key is to make drinking and/or using again a non-negotiable. You chose to step away, or in my case run like hell, from alcohol and drugs. Let each day live in its own bubble knowing the further you get away from your last high further amplifies why this is the best decision you've ever made for your life!
The first day, week, and month will be packed with a ton of physical compulsion, emotional surges, and mental doubt. You are going through withdrawals and a breakup simultaneously and there are going to be ebbs and flows of confidence and self-doubt.
Everyone has their own path to go up. Just because my path looks different than yours doesn't mean I am lost. The key, for me, was realizing every way can work if the person making that choice is committed to sobriety and recovery.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, I will call on you.

The Six Human Needs: How they lead to addiction
Monday Jan 14, 2019
Monday Jan 14, 2019
Ep #3 - The Six Human Needs are foundational for everyone alive. In Addiction Recovery understanding how the six human needs lead you into addiction will drastically benefit you as you move through sobriety and into recovery. Here are the six human needs as defined by Tony Robbins:
1. Certainty
2. Uncertainty/Variety
3. Significance
4. Love/Connection
5. Growth
6. Contribution
If an activity, person, job, hobby, or anything else you think of can cover at least three of these then you are very likely to continue pursuing that activity or person. If all six can be covered then it can easily become something you seek to do every day - whether it be in a habitual form or an outright addiction.
Habits are not all bad. In fact, they are neither good nor bad. What gives you the impression they are one or the other is the outcome they lead you toward.
Being on your phone a lot isn't necessarily a bad habit if you are getting things accomplished while using it. However, if you are constantly staring at it, ignoring people in social situations, scrolling through social media instead of getting real work done, etc. then being on your phone a lot is a bad habit because it is adversely affecting your actual life.
Addiction is more complex than habitual behavior. Unlike a habit such as brushing your teeth, you have almost no control over your impulsive desire to repeatedly engage in an addiction. This is where serotonin and dopamine play their roles. While addictive substance abuse negatively affects your relationships, job, and self, you are unable to stop the behavior without drastic action.
For me, finding areas in my life where I could meet my six human needs in a positive way, i.e. toward sobriety and recovery, was integral in getting myself on the right track and in the right frame of mind so I could succeed in my addiction recovery and not feel the impulse to relapse.
Once you listen to the show, comment on how you used the six human needs to slide into addiction and how you can use them to pull you out of addiction and toward a fruitful life in sobriety and recovery.
