Ep #297: We're diving deep into what it takes to change your life and stay sober. First and foremost, you have to want to change. No one can make you do it but yourself. Most of the hard work happens when nobody's around to cheer you on. It's in those quiet moments that real progress is made.
Remember, you're moving forward even when it feels like you're going backward. Just because others seem to be zooming ahead doesn't mean you're not progressing. Imagine sitting in a car at a standstill while the car next to you moves forward—it feels like you're going backward, but you're not.
Just being in the game is a reward in itself—and once you think you've won, the game has really just begun. Like Olympians who achieve what they thought was the pinnacle, there's always a new bar to raise.
Accept yourself, but change your behavior. You are worthy of the air you breathe, just like everyone else. Remember, your space begins at the end of your nose and ends as far as you can reach. No one else is responsible for your change. Your trauma is not your fault, but your healing is. Take responsibility for your actions, and don't be a drain on those around you—understand the difference between taking advantage and earning support.
Persistency and consistency separate those who achieve their dreams from those who regret not attaining them. I didn't set out to get to 297 when this all started. I didn't see much, if any, of my life back then being what it is today - but along the way, I set challenges for myself and then left it all on the proverbial field or in the metaphorical water, and I do not intend to let up any time soon!
Here is to moving ALL THE WAY UP, even when the storm clouds rumble while the sun shines.

Circumstances, events, and actions pour at you like Niagra pouring off that cliff - the one constant we can know without a doubt is that everything we experience, and its good, bad, right, and wrong, is strongly influenced by our subjective perspectives. New to sobriety, and you might still find that hopelessness that engulfed you back then enflaming you today - but there is a way out. You make decisions and follow through on them. Ep #292: Do you recognize when you shift from one routine into the next? What cues you to change from the work version of yourself to the family, recovery, emotional, or working out versions? Oh, the list goes on. You know how you've looked around and said to yourself, "Well, now what am I going to do?" The main problem in that strategy is that our emotions and mood at the moment can send us back to our default behavior, to habits that are engrained through years of use - and if the habit that pops to mind is using, or vegging out or doom scrolling, then you are going to have difficulty starting to introduce the changes that over time will drastically alter your life up the path that will set you free from your addicted mind and forward toward the life you desire.
This episode builds on last week's, as clearly, there is a need in our community to further understand and adapt our routines and behaviors to your new lifestyle. Triggers exist, and trying to hide from that word is like trying to hide from oxygen - they both seep into every nook and cranny, so calling triggers activations or cues or trip wires is fine and dandy; you call them what you want - just acknowledge that they are there and transfer your tranced out default behavior toward the mindfulness that encourages you to take one hat on and put another atop your head as you continue exploring the infinite possibilities available to you in your sobriety and recovery!
