Ep #232 - Stigmas are the driving force behind a lack of empathy in our society. How you talk about yourself, to yourself and others, how society sees others who are different from them, and how our governmental and organizational policies, directives, and laws can subtly, and not so subtly, castigate the already suffering deeper into their isolation, addiction, and mental health quandary.
In this week's episode, I cheerlead the "releasing stigmas" movement [which I may have just made up] and help us all recognize the nuanced ways our language patterns can alienate those who need our help the most.
Important key points and topics of this episode:
Stigma: Reflects a discriminatory attitude, disrespect, shame, or contempt.
Labels: Often reflect the beliefs of the people doing the labeling. Beliefs are just firm opinions and can also be projections of the labeler's unconscious deficiencies.
Three kinds of stigmas:
1. Self
2. Public
3. Institutional
REACT

Recognize the stigmatizing behavior.
-
Explain why this is hurtful to others and not helpful.
-
Act to support those being stigmatized.
-
Care for those being stigmatized and the stigmatized, as they are both in a place of being hurt and ashamed.

Turn to friends, coaches, mentors, and sponsors for support and additional insights into behaviors you can propagate to help destigmatize yourself and others in the eyes of society.

Ep #230 - There are so many different ways we can frame addiction. Numerous models and labels society wants to place upon addan attempt to take a very complex issue and whittle it down to a slogan or bumper stict's really discuss addiction, emphasizing it as a brain disease, not merely a lack of willpower. I'll shed light on the brain's pleasure circuits and the role of dopamine, elucidating how substance use addictions like alcohol, cocaine, and opioids, to behavioral addictions like gambling, shopping, and eating how can hijack the brain's reward system, a feedback pathway utilized to ensure survival from our early beginnings as a species. Discover how substances profoundly alter brain chemistry, leading to escalating usage and cognitive decline ine in focus and memory. Beyond neuroscience, we will examine the history of substance use in American society - from the pilgrims getting tipsy on the Mayflower to drugs being demonized by politicians and society as subcultural issues.
Here are a few of the addiction models I'll cover:
- Disease Model: Views addiction as a medical condition needing treatment.
- Moral Model: Asserts addiction results from moral failing or weak will.
- Family Model: Focuses on familial dynamics and roles that perpetuate addiction.
- Neurobiological Model: Highlights brain structures and neurotransmitters in addiction development.
- Cognitive Behavioral Model: Emphasizes learned behaviors and thought patterns influencing substance use.

Whether it be during a new habit's creation or waking up realizing that 73 days has become 1 while I was sleeping - taking responsibility for my actions and results, and the thoughts and feelings floating (or rampaging) inside of me at any moment are mine and mine alone to work through.

Ep #226 - Addiction recovery at it's heart is about personal growth and self-discovery. We chose to accept this journey when we sought sobriety as a way of life - or atleast you all chose this mindset because you do, after all, listen to this show.
Today let's get a bit philosophical. Let's explore our ways of thinking...not to necessarily change our opinions, values, beliefs, etc., but to check ourselves a bit, to step further into the sunshine and out of the shade.
Topics for today:
That which you resist persists.
Restriction causes friction
Loosely held strong opinions
Do not take things personally
Self-awareness
Philosophical hypothesis:
1. What if every decision you have ever made exists in it's own room in your Decisions McMansion? What if ever decision is just who you were then and every decision has a door that allows you to go back, time and time again, to make the same decision or check that decision for validity as the current version of you?
Questions we use to guide us is this infinite space:
What if everything I think is true?
What if everything I think is false?
What if everything I like about something is true and everything someone else doesn't like about this thing is false?
What if everything I like about something is false and everything someone else doesn't like about this thing is true?
Checking our egos at the door is not something the brain is prone to do so we have to be willing to push ourselves into that uncomfortable space so often that we grow comfortable in the uncomfortable - as I believe once something gets comfortable then the growing slows. It doesn't stop. Growing is always happening BUT it can slow down and in a world where we can create our best selves it is imperative we know when we can work a little harder or take a rest day.

Ep #225 - In today's chaotic world, we often lose sight of the value of real communication, personal responsibility, and the importance of taking our time—especially crucial when navigating the journey from sobriety to recovery. Let's explore how these three elements become the cornerstone of any successful recovery story.
Effective communication is vital in any recovery journey, as it helps prevent misunderstandings and conflicts. We're all leaders in some aspect of our lives, and clear communication is key for leadership. More importantly, it's essential for managing complex emotions like anger and despair, which can derail recovery if not properly addressed.
Taking personal responsibility is central to a successful recovery. Owning your story helps break the toxic cycle of blaming, complaining, and making excuses. It empowers you to shift from seeing your past as a "wasted life" to viewing it as a source of wisdom and purpose. Acknowledging your ability to shape your life creates an empowering narrative for your recovery.
Slowing down can actually speed up your recovery. While acting on impulse may seem brave, it can also be reckless and counterproductive. Adopting mindfulness and awareness techniques allows you to assess situations more clearly. This aligns with themes from our previous episode, "Time Wasted or Wisdom Gained?", emphasizing that slowing down is a key component of a successful recovery.

Ep #224 - How you gauge your healing and growth in your sobriety and recovery journey is paramount to maintaining that pink cloud, early enthusiasm. If you aren't paying attention to the little things you are doing each day, and instead relying on big, huge, movements forward then your excitement for each day can begin to wane.
So, now is the time for me to re-introduce you to the system I created for myself, in my first months of sobriety, that opened my mind up to how easy it is to grow and heal each day - if I am framing my activities in such a way that I recognize how different my behaviors in sobriety are in comparison to my actions in active addiction.
We want to be mindful that "over-productivity" can begin to wear on us, perhaps even feeling toxic, and through the Spheres and Pillars system you can easily see how the smallest activity is so powerful in your healing.
Here is the way to write it out:
Career: Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual
Self: Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual
Relationships: Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual
Listen to the episode and get to writing this stuff down because each and every day the smallest, little action is turning your life up - and now is the time to notice this!

Ep #223 - I hear, "this is a waste of time," often when speaking to people who have been in and out of recovery centers, lapsed/relapsed, and are trying new things to better their life in addiction recovery. Something being "a waste of time" is subjective to your perspective. Circumstances happening in your life can equally be experienced as awesome, monumental, and life-changing if you choose that perspective instead.
The tiniest little thing can be a sign that your life is heading in a more desirable direction. Noticing an albino squirrel, the butterfly on the flower, not yelling at the car driving erratically, speaking calmly to a loved one where yelling used to occur. The examples are endless. The monotonous and mundane events in life they we choose to behave differently in - that is the power of self-awareness and recovery.
